Travel documents

A valid identity card is sufficient as a travel document. A passport is not absolutely necessary.

At the time of your planned departure from Germany or the Schengen area, your passport must still be valid for at least 3 months. Every traveler needs their own document to identify themselves. This regulation also applies to children and babies.

Further documents

Whether you need further documents depends on how you are planning your stay. If you want to work or study, you should bring all your educational qualifications and other proof of your qualifications with you and have them checked beforehand to see whether they are recognized in Germany.

If you want to drive, you must check in advance whether your driver's license will be recognized in Germany. You should also find out about health insurance. Valid insurance is essential during your stay.
