Health insurance for temporary stays
Regulated medical care is not possible without a health insurance card. You should also check whether your insurance is valid in Germany before short-term visits. The European Health Insurance Card EHIC only covers emergency treatment in Germany.
Working and studying in Germany is not permitted without health insurance. EU citizens are generally already covered by health insurance and can keep their insurance under certain conditions. This also largely applies to students whose countries have concluded a social security agreement with Germany.
It is essential to register with a German health insurance company if you wish to complete your entire course of study in Germany.
If you are not from the EU, you must be insured with a German health insurance company for both a full course of study in Jena and for a shorter period of study, e.g. in the form of an exchange semester. Please contact the International Office at your university for more information.
