Pregnancy and birth
If you are pregnant in Germany, membership of a statutory health insurance scheme guarantees you the best possible medical care.
Gynaecologist
Your gynecologist will check the progress of your pregnancy approximately every 4 weeks. In the last few weeks before the birth, you will be called into the practice more frequently. The services covered by statutory health insurance include 3 comprehensive ultrasound screenings in which the doctor checks the development of your child.
Your gynecologist will inform you in advance about possible costs if he or she considers additional examinations advisable.
Midwife
Many gynecologists work together with a midwife, who you can contact if you have any further questions. Find out in advance what services the midwife in question offers. You always have the option of finding a midwife you trust yourself.
Independent midwives sometimes offer support during pregnancy so that you don't have to visit the doctor's surgery as often. You can usually attend a free antenatal class. This will provide you with important information about pregnancy and birth and you will also get to know the midwife better.
In some hospitals, your midwife can accompany and support you during the birth of your child. At Jena Hospital, however, midwives work as permanent employees. As soon as you are back home after the birth, your midwife will check on you and your child every day.
In order to be able to take advantage of this aftercare, you should look for a midwife right at the beginning of your pregnancy. At a later stage, it is very difficult to find a midwife who still has free capacity.
All services provided by the midwife are covered by statutory health insurance. Of course, a midwife will also look after you, taking into account any risks, if you wish to deliver your baby at home or in a birthing center.
First visit service
The city of Jena also supports young families with its first visit service. The new arrivals are welcomed and their parents receive useful information about family life in Jena.
