Overview of childcare

In Germany, it is common for young children to attend a childcare facility. This gives them the chance to learn with and from each other, to practise their language and social skills and to try things out in a protected environment. Meanwhile, you as parents can pursue your own work or education in peace of mind.

Childcare habits vary greatly from region to region. While in some areas childcare places are only offered for children aged 3 and over, in Thuringia more than one in two children under the age of 3 make use of childcare services. Over 90 percent of all children between the ages of 3 and 6 attend childcare facilities.

In Jena, childcare is part of a lively educational network. This is characterized by close cooperation between families, educators, teachers, social pedagogues, associations and the municipality. All stakeholders are in constant communication in order to optimize educational opportunities.

The individual childcare facilities have different pedagogical concepts, but all have in common individual support with a wide range of educational opportunities. The scope of care can be determined individually within the opening hours.

Children up to the age of 3 can be cared for in crèches. Depending on the facility, admission is possible from the age of 3 months.

The main focus of care is on nursing and care as well as teaching initial skills and knowledge, e.g. social interaction. In Jena, the crèches are part of the daycare centers.

In kindergartens, children from the age of 3 until they start school are looked after, can play together and are individually supported in their development. In Jena, kindergartens are part of the daycare centers.

The term daycare center (KiTa) is defined very differently from region to region. KiTas look after children all day until the age of 6 or until they start school. Day nurseries and kindergartens often merge here.

The facilities accept children from the age of 1, sometimes even younger, and care for them in age-appropriate groups.

There are currently 73 daycare centers in Jena. The daycare centers are operated by various providers on behalf of the city, while some facilities are run by the city itself. Some facilities bear the name "ThEKiZ" (Thuringian Parent-Child Center). They see themselves as facilities with a particularly strong focus on families and social spaces and support both children and parents with a wide range of services. You can find out more about the facilities, concepts and available places on the City of Jena's daycare portal and register your child straight away.
